Open and convert HEIC photos on Windows and iPhone

HEIC is usually a compatibility problem, not a broken file. Keep the original, then create a JPG or PNG copy suited to the application that needs it.

Updated August 30, 2026

The short method

  • Keep the original HEIC as your source if you want to preserve the best available file.
  • Choose JPG for photos shared with Windows, forms, email, or everyday printing.
  • Choose PNG only when you need a lossless intermediate file or real transparency.
  • Convert once, inspect the result at 100%, and avoid repeated JPG re-encoding.

Why iPhones create HEIC files

HEIC is a common extension for images stored in a HEIF container. Apple uses HEIF on recent devices to retain good quality in files that are generally smaller than older JPEG equivalents.

The container can also carry multiple images and auxiliary information. A photo can therefore work on an iPhone while being rejected by older Windows software, a form, or a service limited to JPG and PNG.

Choose JPG or PNG for the destination

For a conventional photograph, JPG is the most compatible choice and is often lighter. Start around quality 82 to 90, then inspect hair, fine textures, skies, and dark areas.

PNG is lossless and can be much larger for photographs. Use it as an intermediate when you expect repeated editing, or when the source contains transparency that must remain transparent.

Convert HEIC in your browser

Add the HEIC files, select JPG, choose quality, and keep aspect ratio enabled. Supported processing runs locally in the browser, so the photo library does not need to be sent to a remote conversion service.

For a batch, apply common settings and download one ZIP archive. The source files are not modified. Keep them until every result has been checked.

  • Resize only when the destination does not need the full resolution.
  • Keep aspect ratio enabled to avoid stretching.
  • Leave metadata preservation off for copies intended for public posting.

Limit quality loss

A JPG export introduces a new lossy compression step. No quality value is invisible for every photograph because noise, texture, contrast, and previous edits all affect the result.

Start from the original HEIC, create one copy, and compare it at 100%. If the file is too large, reduce dimensions to the actual display need before applying aggressive quality reduction.

When a HEIC file will not open

First confirm that the file finished copying from the iPhone or iCloud. A .heic extension does not guarantee that an interrupted download contains a complete image.

Then test one smaller file. If several applications fail on the same original, retrieve it again from its source. A converter cannot reconstruct missing or corrupted image data.

Convert a HEIC photo

The HEIC to JPG preset opens the converter with the most compatible output already selected.
